Art Creates Change: Action

Art Creates Change: Action - Vodou and Haitian Art
Auditorium

1:00pm, Friday March 5, 2010

A lecture, exhibition and silent auction in support of Haiti

The Faculties of Art and Liberal Studies present:

Lecture:
Patrick Bellegarde-Smith, professor of Africology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and an Oungon Asogwe (a high practitioner of Vodou religion and spirituality) will lecture on Vodou and Haitian Art. Professor Bellegarde-Smith will address misperceptions surrounding Vodou, and in the process reveal the strength found in its cultural practices and historic vision.

The event will be an opportunity for students at OCAD, and members of the community, to ask questions about Vodou, its cultural and artistic manifestations and influences. In addition, students in Canada will learn of their connections to Haiti and the history of the revolutionary spirit that has brought democracy to the modern world, and fought for freedoms and rights for all.

Audience members may also enter a dialogue in supporting immediate relief efforts and long-term goals for partnerships with Haitian run organizations in Haiti.

Exhibition:
Art on exhibit will represent the past four generations of Haitian artists, from the 1940’s to the present. All of the paintings are thematically influenced by or directly representative of Vodou practices. Also on display, Vodou Flags, Drapeau, created for use in ceremonies; these hold the strength and exhuberance of their history — of action and resistance.

Artwork, courtesy of Arte Del Pueblo, carries the provenance of some of the most prominent collections including those of Dr. Halvor and Astrid Jaeger of Montréal, and filmmaker Jonathan Demme.

Silent auction:
Donated artworks. Proceeds go to SOPUDEP, located in Petion-ville, Haiti, a comprehensive community school serving the poorest residents of the city. (www.sopudep.org)
